Hello Beautiful Soul,🌷
Today, a client said something that stayed with me.
She told me she had received massages before, but this time she could really feel the attention being given to her muscles - especially the areas that had been troubling her.
As we worked, she noticed her back beginning to relax.
I have heard similar words from clients before, but today they reminded me that I should explain a little more about the way I work.
Because my massage can feel deeply relaxing. It can also feel quite intense in places.
And yes, we usually find something to laugh about along the way.
“Your partner can stroke your back at home for free.”😅
This is something I sometimes say to my clients, with a smile:
“Your partner can stroke your back at home for free. If you’re paying me, I’d better give your muscles some proper attention.”🙈
A little cheeky? Perhaps.
But behind the joke is something I take seriously: you are trusting me with your body, your time, and your money. I want to give you thoughtful, attentive work.
For me, that means taking time to notice where you are holding tension, listening to what you feel, and adjusting my approach as we go.
Gentle massage has its place, too. Sometimes, gentle is exactly what a body needs. My job is to understand what is suitable for you that day.
What deeper work can feel like
When I work slowly into a tense area, you may notice tenderness or a strong, concentrated sensation.
Sometimes you recognise the spot immediately:
“Yes. That is exactly where I feel it.”
I pay attention to how the muscles respond, and I ask you to tell me how the pressure feels. We can ease it, change the technique, or move to another area at any time.
You should be able to breathe comfortably through the treatment. If you are holding your breath, pulling away, or bracing yourself against my hands, I need to know.
You never need to be polite and endure pressure that feels too much.
Depth comes from patience, attention, and the right approach for your body.
Can you feel sore the next day?
Some people notice a mild ache or tenderness after deeper massage, a little like the feeling after unfamiliar exercise. Others feel comfortable straight away.
You might notice it in the shoulders, back, or another area that received focused attention.
If mild tenderness appears, give yourself a day or two to settle. Keep movement gentle and comfortable, and allow yourself some rest.
Soreness is not something we aim to create, and you do not need it to benefit from a massage.
If pain is severe, getting worse, or accompanied by bruising, swelling, numbness, or weakness, please seek medical advice rather than waiting for it to pass. Let me know, too.
Looking beyond the place that hurts
I want to understand what brings you to my studio.
Where do you feel tension? What movements feel uncomfortable? How do you spend your working day? What has helped before?
Sometimes, we give attention to surrounding muscles as well as the place you first noticed discomfort.
Massage can help ease muscular tension, but it cannot always tell us why pain is happening. Persistent or recurring symptoms may need assessment by a GP or physiotherapist.
My part is to work carefully within that picture, with your comfort and needs guiding the session.
And then… a little room for wings
The feeling I hope to help you find is familiar to many of my clients.
Your shoulders feel less crowded around your ears. Moving feels a little easier. You take a comfortable breath and realise how much tension you had been carrying.
That is where my favourite image comes in:
“Give your body a day or two to settle - and perhaps you’ll feel as though you’ve grown wings.”
A little poetic, of course. But you may know the feeling.
Lighter. Freer. A little more yourself.
At my home-based women’s studio in North Greenwich, London, every massage is a conversation between your body, my hands, and what you tell me.
Some days we work more deeply. Some days your body asks for gentleness.
You are always welcome to tell me what you need.
With love,
Olena💖
